How to clean your home before putting it on the market

A focused cleaning checklist to help kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces look cared for during viewings.
Start with what buyers notice
Clean the entrance, clear hallway clutter and wipe doors, handles and switches. In each room, remove excess items so floors and useful storage are easy to see.
Open curtains or blinds and clean accessible glass and mirrors. Natural light shows dust and streaks, so inspect surfaces from more than one angle.
Give kitchens and bathrooms extra attention
Degrease suitable kitchen surfaces, clean appliance exteriors and remove crumbs from cupboards that viewers may open. Descale taps and shower screens using products safe for their finish.
Empty bins before every viewing and deal with the source of odours rather than relying on strong air fresheners.
Finish with floors and details
Vacuum edges and under movable furniture, then mop hard floors with the correct product. Wipe skirting boards, door frames and visible marks on washable surfaces.
A one-off professional clean can help when time is short, particularly before photographs or the first open viewing.
