Carpet cleaning for pet owners: stains, hair and odours

How to care for carpets in a home with pets and when a deeper professional clean may help.
Respond to accidents quickly
Blot liquid with a clean absorbent cloth instead of rubbing, which can spread the mark and push it deeper into the pile. Follow the carpet manufacturer's guidance before using any treatment.
Test products on a hidden area first. Different fibres and dyes react differently, so a treatment that suits one carpet may damage another.
Control hair and tracked-in dirt
Vacuum slowly in more than one direction and pay attention to edges, stairs and the places where pets sleep. Cleaning entrance mats regularly reduces the soil carried further into the home.
Pet bedding should be cleaned according to its label. This helps tackle the source of smells rather than masking them with fragrance.
When to consider professional cleaning
A professional can inspect the fibre, choose an appropriate method and pre-treat suitable stains. Explain what caused each mark and mention any treatment already used.
Some permanent staining or fibre damage cannot be reversed, so ask what result is realistic before work begins.
